LIVE IN SAN FRANCISCO
Ry Cooder's first live record in more than 35 years, Live in San Francisco, was recorded in 2011 during a special two-night engagement at San Francisco's Great American Music Hall, includes 12 songs and was produced by Cooder. Live in San Francisco includes original songs and interpretations of other material ranging across Cooder's entire career, from classics like "Boomer's Story" and "Dark End of the Street" to more recent originals such as "Lord Tell Me Why" and "El Corrido de Jesse James," with a detour for Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs' "Wooly Bully" and Lead Belly's "Goodnight Irene."
BOP TILL YOU DROP
1979’s Bop Till You Drop marks acclaimed guitarist/songwriter/composer Ry Cooder's return to R&B/soul classics and has the distinction of being the first major-label digitally recorded album. Featuring accompaniment from David Lindley (guitar), Tim Drummond (bass) and Jim Keltner (drums) and an assortment of guest vocalists, the 9-song set consists of covers of largely '50s and '60s material along with the Cooder/Drummond original "Down In Hollywood." Highlights include "Little Sister,” "The Very Thing That Makes You Rich (Makes Me Poor)," “Don’t Mess Up A Good Thing” (featuring Chaka Khan) and “I Can’t Win” (featuring Bobby King).
BORDERLINE
Ry Cooder's 1980 Warner Bros. album Borderline follows-up his 1979 effort Bop Till You Drop and it takes that album's charming electric R&B/soul explorations and mixes in sounds of the Southwest. Some of Cooder's collaborators here include the revered John Hiatt (guitar/vocals) and Jim Keltner (drums) and the substantial 10-song set is highlighted by impassioned cuts like "The Girls from Texas," "The Way We Make a Broken Heart" and "Crazy 'Bout an Automobile (Every Woman I Know)."
ELECTION SPECIAL
Ry Cooder’s Election Special is a wake-up call for the 2012 US election. On the album, which he produced, Cooder plays mandolin, guitar, and bass and wrote all of the songs, co-writing one with Joachim Cooder, who plays drums on the record. Uncut names Election Special 'Album of the Month.' Mojo gives it four stars, saying: "Ry has proved equal to the crying need of the times." The Guardian gives the album four stars as well, calling it "an entertaining, thoughtful and bravely original set." Rolling Stone, in its four-star review, exclaims: "A guitar great takes a shot at political satire and hits the mark."
