The Greatest white guitar player ever (CERTAINLY: THE GREATEST WHITE SLIDE GUITAR PLAYER EVER), and probably the greatest living expert in the music of the western hemisphere - plus a great human being, anthropologist and a session musician supreme - Ry Cooder recorded this seminal album in 1972, and it is still being viewed by many as one of 2-3 of his best, most enduring, efforts. The songs are a great mixture of R&B, Caribbean calypso, Rural blues and anything-that’s-syncopated-to-the-max. The material includes no less than two cover version of Sleepy John Estes’ songs, another one by Skip James, admittedly Ry’s favorite author/musician, plus his rendition of an old Penn-Oldham southern soul gem, "Dark Side of the Street". The songs are: Boomer’s story - Cherry Ball Blues - Crow Black Chicken - Ax sweety mama - Good Morning, Mr. Railroad Man - Dark end of the street - Rally ‘round the flag - President Kennedy - Maria Elena - Comin’ in on a wing and a prayer. The guitar playing is simply quite exquisite. Think of this as a "Guitar Playing Course 001”

THE WHITE LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)            The record comes in a poly-lined inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(c)             The record is pressed on a RELATIVELY  thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type),  vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.

(d)          White Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 10:1.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD+ (+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has all three seams (top, bottom and spine) partially split,  as follows:

-         Top seam: less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters.

-         Bottom seam: between 1 and 2 inches  / 2.5 to 5 centimeters.

-         Spine: between 2 and 4 inches  / 5 to 10 centimeters.

-         Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on all three seams

-        Cover has some writing on its back side  (date and initials of the previous owner written in blue ballpoint pen, about 3 square inches in size); small letter "C" (filing code) written in one corner on front side, about 1/4 x 1/4 inch in isze

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging   (nothing significant).

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Cover has all four corners slightly worn / dinged / bent. (nothing significant)

-         Small whitish stain noted on back panel (nothing significant) (less than ¼ square inch in size)

-         Back cover has a small peel-off mark, probably from the careless removal of the price sticker  (less than 1/8 square inch in size)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No stamps

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
