Ryo Fukui, one of Japan's most revered jazz pianists, takes centre stage in this re-pressed live performance, capturing the height of his artistic maturation at the 9th anniversary bash of Slowboat, the jazz live house he founded. At 56 years old, Fukui's playing is a stunning blend of power and delicacy, showcasing a balance of energy, technique, and depth that defined his later years. Accompanied by Kosuke Sakai on bass and Yoshito Eto on drums, the trio delivers electrifying renditions of pieces by Phineas Newborn Jr., Tommy Flanagan, and Wayne Shorter, all of whom had a significant influence on Fukui's style. The performance, now recaptured on its own 30th anniversary, not only reflects Fukui's fascination with greats, but captures his own distinct voice and voicings.
