Description
Columbia introduced their "Race Series" beginning in November of
1923, starting with number 13000-D. After a total of only 8 issues, the
series was discontinued (perhaps the fear of the number 13 was a
major factor), and quickly was replaced with the Race 14000-D series, which
lasted for almost 10 years and nearly 700 issues.
Here is one of the eight issues from that early series, a flag label
Columbia 13005-D done by the legendary blues artist Bessie Smith.
Bessie is accompanied by Irving Johns and Jimmy Jones on piano,
and sings "St. Louis Gal."
On the other side, she sings "Sam Jones Blues" with Irving Johns on
piano.
Both sides were done in New York City on September 24, 1923.
The record is in excellent to excellent-minus (E to E-) condition. The B
side has a couple of tiny scratches which make isolated ticks, and a
small dig which ticks 4 times.
