Description
Son of Mississippi: Flight NAACP 105 / The Voice of Alabama. Rebel 500, VG+ (very light wear, a few scuffs, good gloss, clean labels.)
This is the first of 20-25 singles on the Rebel label, ca. 1967-69. Some were recitations; others were “comic” routines; and still others were musical. The common themes were opposition to President Lyndon Johnson’s “Great Society” programs; support for segregationist policies still prevalent in the Deep South; and flat-out racism.
Even 50 years ago it’s surprising these records were openly sold (and probably played on certain juke-boxes in certain bars and restaurants.) Remarkably, Rebel records were recorded (and some composed) by Jay Miller, the same man who produced dozens of “swamp blues” discs by Lightnin’ Slim, Lonesome Sundown and other Excello artists -- often using a rhythm section of mostly white and cajun guys. Miller rationalized this by saying he was simply serving a market and Rebel Records were mostly political. That’s true to a point, but a lot of this material was simply ugly.
