Original Australian pressing on CBS with illustrated inner sleeve
The soundtrack to Raiders of the Lost Ark was released by Columbia Records in June 1981. The music was composed and conducted by John Williams, and performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. Orchestrations were done by Herbert W. Spencer with additional orchestrations done by Al Woodbury. The soundtrack received an Oscar nomination for best original score, but lost out to Vangelis' score for Chariots of Fire.
Whilst clearly inspired by the likes of Stravinsky, Bartok, Prokofiev and even Ligeti, the dramatic pacing and memorable themes are quintessential John Williams. The theme that represents the Ark itself has to be one of the most eerily powerful themes ever penned (listen to 'Well of Souls'), and of course the 'Raiders March' itself is tremendous. All in all a fantastic score, brilliantly performed/conducted.
