Rare 78rpm - Harry Lauder - World War I Speech after Only Son Killed In Action. Historical - Great War Appeal for 1,000,000 pounds sterling For Maimed Scottish Soldiers & Sailors Fund Raising For Returning Maimed WWI Scottish Soldier & Sailors An interesting historical recorded document of the British home front during The Great War
Lauder makes a heart-felt appeal, ending speech with a poignant and emotional reference to his only son, killed in action. Asking a million Scots to reach into their pockets and send a pound each... Lauder's only son was killed 9 months before he recorded this speech on September 27, 1917, while the War was still being strongly fought.
He ends the speech emotionally: "My appeal is to the English speaking world..." "... because the fear of the British soldier standing on the streets, selling matches or laces after this war, would make me wish to God that my son had not laid down his life for his country!"
