Description
The Penguin Book of English Folk Songs, sung by A. L. Lloyd, accompanied by Alf Edwards on concertina (Collector JGB 5001)
Very rare LP from famed folkorist and folk singer A. L. Lloyd. This is, I believe, the first ever collection of English folk songs to have been recorded for LP release, and is based on the Penguin book edited and compiled by Lloyd. Released on Collector Records (JGB 5001), it was Lloyd’s first release and is possibly his rarest. The penguin english folk songs collection, and this release, were essential in for the english folk revival of the 60s that brought out such legends as shirley collins (whose Topic 'Heroes of Love' Ep features 'The false Bride', one of the tracks included here), anne briggs and many others. Essential stuff for folk and roots collectors.
It is certainly hard to turn up a record like this in such superb condition. The vinyl is shiny as new and grades visually as a very conservative ex+++ (there are a few scarcely visible marks, but I have not cleaned it, and I suspect that professional cleaning would remove them); most people would grade this as mint minus, but I don’t like using that grade on LPs. Label is also perfect, there are one or two light spindle marks on side a, one very light mark on side b. Cover is also in superb condition, minimal creasing to laminate, and though the corners are slightly snubbed and the spine is flattened, there is no feathering, splitting or wear. Opening is sharp. Original wax paper inner, also in near perfect shape! I would be surprised if it had ever been played more than once or twice in total, it looks brand new.
