Here we have Spanish tenor Francisco Viñas usually known by the Italian version of his name, Francesco Vignas.
Mr Wikipedia informs us that, early on in his career, “in the space of three years he sang Lohengrin 120 times” so he probably had vocal cords made of rhinoceros-skin.
Here, he is on a lovely original Green And Red Fonotipia 10-and-a-bit-inches disc, performing two standard pieces.
From Verdi’s “Aida” we have “Celeste Aida” (on side 92344) and “O Paradiso” from Meyerbeer’s L’Africana” (on side 92345). They were recorded in Milan on 11th and 12th of November 1908 and have orchestral accompaniment.
He was best known for Wagnerian roles, and whenever his (rather rare) records turn up, they are usually of the Wagnerian type. These two sides, being about actual human beings from Egypt and Africa, are about as un-Wagnerian as you can get, and are quite excellent.
The disc is VERY CLEAN AND TIDY and plays loudly and very well.
We reckon that it’s at least a STRONG V+++++++ or better using VJM’s vague and imprecise system of grading.
There is some slight greying of a few grooves (it’s a VERY LOUD record) but otherwise it shines (to quote Paul Simon) like a National guitar.
