Max Roach has often been acknowledged as THE outstanding drummer of the Modern School. A native of Brooklyn, New York, Max joined a marching band playing the bugle, but later picked up the the drums, the only other instrumental alternative for African American musicians at the time, at the behest of his mother. He saw the great bands of that era at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem almost every Saturday and the symphony orchestra at the concert hall near his home every Sunday, with his main interest always focused on the drummers. His flawless technique has its deepest roots in his early interest in observing and all he could about symphonic tympani. 

His first important opportunity came when he appeared with Duke Ellington at the Paramount Theatre in New York when the original drummer was ill; he was only sixteen. It wasn't long before he was making a name for himself playing with stars such as Dizzy Gillespie, Theolonious Monk, Don Byas, Charlie Parker and Miles Davis.  In fact it was Dizzy Gillespie who first made Max Roach aware of Clifford Brown, saying "Man, there's this cat down in Wilmington who plays the piano and blows the ---- out of the trumpet!"

Gillespie met Clifford Brown by chance. One night in 1949,  Gillespie played a date in Wilmington, Delaware, where Clifford Brown was born. Fortunately Clifford, who'd been playing the trumpet since he was 13, was able to step in for 45 minutes to cover for one of the trumpet players who was late. With the encouragement of Dizzy Gillespie, Clifford pursued music at Maryland College while he was also a member of the house band at jazz concerts in Philadelphia, where he would play three times a month with J.J. Johnson, Ernie Henry, Fats Navarro, and, of course, Max Roach. 

This album is a collaboration of Max Roach on drums, Clifford Brown on trumpet, Teddy Edwards on tenor sax, Carl Perkins on piano, George Bledsoe on bass.

The EP is an original press and plays in stereo, which in 1954 was advanced for it's time. The Vinyl is in excellent condition with some light marks and plays like new. The sleeve is in excellent condition with only minor fraying on the corners. A truly rare find. Satisfaction Guaranteed!!!
