Crikey! This is a very rare and desirable record.
It’s “Molly Bawn” written by Samuel Lover and sung by John McCormack on a Gramophone and Typewriter 10” single-sided record.
It was recorded on the 24th of September 1904 in London(Thank you Robert Johannesson) and it has piano accompaniment.
The number of this astonishingly rare item (made before his Victor contract.. when he was recording discs and cylinders for many different companies) is GC 3 2164.
To be fair, this record doesn’t show McCormack’s singing at its best.
He was still young and learning his craft, and his diction isn’t as precise as in his later recordings. Also, the G&T’s made at this session seem to be recorded at 75 or 76 rpm and make McCormack’s voice appear slightly “thinner” if played at 78rpm.
The plinky-plonky underwater piano accompaniment doesn’t help either.
However... there’s enough McCormack magic still there to make this record very desirable, and it’s astonishingly RARE, so you can wave it about and say “naa naa naa naa naa! Look what I’ve got!”.
It’ll be a prize gem in any collection.
CONDITION: The disc has a very few “grit in the sleeve” marks, but no needle-runs or large scratches. It has the usual satin sheen of discs of this era and a lightly textured label, with a surrounding raised lip. There are a few light scratch marks on the label, but nothing lethal or disastrous. Have a look at the photographs and see what you think.
We reckon that it’s probably a strong V+ or maybe better, and it plays extremely well with no blasting.
