Along with Sunny Murray, Milford Graves is one of the first and most
innovative free jazz drummers. Without question one of the greatest
players to emerge from the free jazz underground of the sixties, his
recordings and performances with the likes of Albert Ayler, The New
York Art Quartet, Arthur Doyle, & Sonny Sharrock - to name a few- are
legendary.
NOMMO, a live recording with Don Pullen is rarely heard,
rarely seen, and is prophetic and hugely influential. Self released on Pullen
and Graves SRP (Self Reliance Project) label, NOMMO is a shockingly early
DIY record release. Pullen is in the Cecil Taylor school, but there is more
space in his sound. The interplay with Graves is telepathic and
powerful.
I hate to see this one go.
Graves who once remarked (I paraphrase) that playing in 4/4 is unhealthy,
has this to say...
”This music will cause a Mind-Challenge-Struggle within the self insofar
that internal control is needed to adjust to the spontaneous forces that will
activate previously stagnant nerve impulses…If one tries to formulate our music,
or listen to it with a biased mind toward rhythm-sound,he will only baffle himself.
If you can let yourself react according to the natural principles of organic
structure and free the mind of conventional laws of western music,you will cause
less bewilderment within yourself”
