Well here’s a nice New Year rarity for you!
It’s the magnificent astonishing “differently sane” soprano Emma Calve recorded in London in July 1902 (Thank You Robert Johannesson).
The selection is “Enchantement” (Massenet) and it’s on a Victor Monarch G&T number 91000 and it features piano accompaniment.
It’s the exact same recording/stamper etc as the UK G&T 3283.
The piano pumper was Landon Ronald, the mx number is 2060b-1 and the recording engineer was the redoubtable Fred Gaisberg.
CONDITIONWISE: We would rate it as pretty darn good. It is the non-raised-rim type of pressing, and has the familiar satin finish of G&T recordings of this date. It is as clean as the work-surfaces of that man with the white dog on the “Flash” adverts. It does have a number of light imperfections which are mostly sleeve marks.
HOWEVER... there is one mark that LOOKS LIKE a hairline crack.
We’re not certain that it really is a hairline crack, and think it may be a pressing fault.
It is very difficult to see.
If you scrunch your eyes up, you can JUST see it on the grooved side, but there is no sign of it on the back!
Doing the holding-it-by-one-finger-on-the-hole-record-tapping manoeuvre, the record “rings” perfectly like a porcelain plate, so it’s either a pressing fault, a very very very safe hairline, or an optical illusion due to drink and drugs (not enough of either).
We’ve had the record for decades, and never noticed it, but under very strong light it is just-about visible.
It plays beautifully. If it weren’t for that pesky mark/hairline/whatever, we would have no hesitation in grading it as a very strong VG+++ or better.
