Here we have soprano Elvira Tetrazzini (1867 – 1959) the sister of Eva and the more famous Luisa. She is performing here with Spanish/Italian tenor Gino Martinez-Patti, whose surname probably confused people expecting a duet between two legendary sopranos. This Patti had a wide-ranging career, and performed under the direction of Richard Strauss in 1907.
The disc is a trouser-burstingly rare 10¾” “Phonodisc Mondial” with both sides recorded in Milan in approximately 1910.
One side has “Coristi Della Scala” (sounding a bit sparse, for an operatic chorus from such a large theatre) singing the Matador’s Chorus from La Traviata.
The other side of this disc is the one you want it for.
It’s “E. Tetrazzini” as she is billed, with “G. Martinez-Patti” and they are performing Brindisi “Libiamo Libiamo” from Traviata.
The catalogue numbers are 475/6 and the Mx numbers are nowhere to be seen.
Both sides are accompanied by an orchestra.
Somewhere on our shelves we have another “Libiamo Libiamo” disc of which we’re very fond, with the hilarious English lyric “Come! A Bumper We’ll Drain!”
Conditionwise, it is very clean and plays well OK.
It shines like one of Greta Thunberg’s infrequent but dazzling smiles.
Probably it rates a strong VG++ or better.
