Well here's a little gem at a knock-down starting price!
It's the celebrated baritone Antoni Scotti, recorded in Noo Yoik on the 10th of February 1905 (that's almost exactly 119 years ago!).
He's performing the Prologue from Pagliacci by Leoncavallo on the difficult-to-find 12" issue Victor G&T red label Gramophone Monarch, with the raised rim and the slightly sunk label.
What makes it unusual, is that this is the Piano Accompanied 12" version, as opposed to the more usually encountered 1906(?) 10" version with orchestral accompaniment. (Thank you Robert Johannesson).
So far, so good. HOWEVER.. this is NOT a perfect copy. It has some water or heat damage (which can't be seen). It manifests as a whooshing sound over the piano intro and several opening bars of the vocal. After that it is fairly OK. There are no major scratches or marks, just that darned whooshing.
Our one-eyed assistant record tester can be seen introducing a video showing the pesky whoosh. It was shot on a dim and dismal day, with the lid of the HMV gramophone OPEN. It's very dark and the open lid and lousy cheap camera make it actually sound worse than it does in real life.
If you don't mind the whoosh at the start, you have a fine record here.
Because it's a "walking wounded" disc we've started it off at a very low price, so have a listen and see what you think.
