Original first pressing UK VINYL only first pressing of a terrific MOD 60's infections that conjure the best styles of early Small Faces & early The Who ... Contains a great photo/info inner sleeve ...this was the first release of the legendary British "Edsel" label who issued a slew of important British 60's Lp's, then this great "ACTION" album issued going on 30 years ago ...it is hard to find to say the least and packs a solid punch, one track after another.

This collection is one of the best pieces of British beat-style R&B available, a match for the best tracks off any of the Small Faces albums and any of the best R&B-style numbers by the early Who. The stuff stands on its own, in any case -- "Harlem Shuffle," "Since I Lost My Baby," and "In My Lonely Room" are among the finest English R&B covers of the period, and even originals like "Never Ever" (written by Alan King, Reggie King, and Mike Evans and the group-composed "Twenty Fourth Hour" are fine pieces of songwriting, with attractive hooks and choruses, and good tight Modrock performances interspread amid hits that never were (like their cover of the Marvelettes' "I'll Keep On Holding On" and the brooding, modish "Wasn't It You,"). In contrast to the Walker Brothers wall-of-sound approach, the five-piece band does it by themselves with no overdubbed help, and Reggie King and company are good enough singers to pull it off, despite a few awkward moments on the fade. The attempts at experimental, quasi-psychedelic material ("Shadows and Reflections") are nicely played and sung. As an added attraction, the production by George Martin is also among the best work of his career in rock & roll, second only to his work with the Beatles. The sleeve notes on the LP were written by the Modfather himself, Paul Weller. In fact, Weller stated that he believed Reggie King's soulful voice sounded far more natural than Steve Marriott's. Praise indeed. The album was preceded by the launch of a single, a superb cover of the Marveletes' I'll Keep on Holding On. Incidentally, the Chords used to introduce their version of this song as " a cover of an old Action song."

There are a number of other cover versions. The best known of these being Bob & Earl's Harlem Shuffle, itself later covered by the Rolling Stones, the Temptations' Since I Lost My Baby, Martha & the Vandellas' In My Lonely Room and the wonderful Land of a Thousand Dances, borrowed from Wilson Pickett. Many of the other tracks are band originals including I Love You (Yeah), Never Ever and Shadows and Reflections are particularly strong band compositions.

The Action were highly popular on the club circuit but despite a top producer and a string of excellent singles, they never managed to crack the charts.
