The Beatles- Yesterday And Today LP (Original US Capitol Press, Stereo ST 2553. No Butcher underneath!)

Here's the infamous US Beatles compilation that gave birth to the Butcher cover scandal... No one really seems to know how many butchers were made and then covered up with this 'trunk' cover. Very few Butchers remained untouched- one box was supposedly discovered years later and all these originals, when they rarely appear, sell for astronomical amounts. Peeled versions are worth much less.

With this trunk cover design, conspiracy theorists later suggested that this cover was one of the major clues to the 'Paul McCartney is dead' myth. Their argument is that the trunk that Paul is sitting in, is meant to resemble his coffin! (Some beatles titles since became collectable for these 'death clues'). Some theorists take this further, saying that the order of the song list itself here is meant to tell the story of his death in a car crash ('drive my car'), and his eventual replacement by an impostor after facial surgery, etc (e.g. 'nowhere man'- 'dr robert'- 'act naturally'- 'and your bird can sing' and so on). It's hard to remember the whole thing, seeing I don't subscribe to the story- I only glanced at it a long time ago, when I was trying to learn more about this album, and the Canadian one called "Very Together." There are pages and pages about it on the internet, some written by people who seriously believe in it- so check them out if any of you want to follow this story up, even if it's just to learn more about the controversial history of this album.

(Since writing this, I located one page to start you off if you're interested- try:

For regular fans (!)- released a couple of months before 'Revolver', this LP gave fans the first glimpse of where the group were going, with much more psychedelic tracks like 'I'm only Sleeping', 'Dr Robert' and 'And your Bird Can Sing', before anyone got to hear the Revolver album as a whole. Note too- the version of 'I'm only sleeping' here is the same as the one on the US rarities compilation. It has a very slight difference to the one on Revolver.

It's actually a very good, if off beat compilation too!

Don't forget to check my other items- lots of other good rock & related LPs, and more Beatles records.

CONDITION (see descriptions below) VG (Has scuffs and some scratches. Despite this it plays very nicely the whole way through, with low surface crackle for this grading and good sound.)

Cover- see picture. Shows its age- especially around the edges. It appears generally clean, but seams are split quite significantly, and there are stains around most edges. There is a piece of sticky tape on the front, RHS in a triangular shape over the end of the word 'Beatles', about 1/4 of the way down the opening- it serves no purpose there at all, so I don't know why it's there! On the top LHS and bottom RHS corners of the picture slick, you can see faint bend lines, where someone has tried to discover a non existant butcher underneath. This is not very noticeable, as they had the decency to restick the slick fairly tastefully!

It is worth noting that postage may work out cheaper if you are buying mutliple items- I work out all combined postage by weight, not on a per item basis. That way you have the best chance to get a good deal on postage rates, wherever you live. I have a huge list of other interesting titles currently on ebay so check them out at "sellers other items" - you may be suprised what you'll find!!!!

Grading/ condition descriptions.

ABOUT THIS GRADING SCALE: it is meant to reflect both the appearance and sound quality of the LP in question. If I ever have doubts re. grading, I play test the item in question. I keep my vinyl clean, and so an LP rated EX, for instance, should play that way without you having to clean it first! I try to be very careful and tough with my grading, but if you are not satisfied for any reason- please contact me!

Those of you that are perfectionists should not be disappointed with anything in the scales between MINT and EXCELLENT, but if the item is below that rating, please read the descriptions carefully!

I occasionally use a + or - to show if the LP is on the high or low side of that grade. That does not mean, however, that an EX-, for instance, is the same as VG+.

MINT: new/ unplayed. I only give this grading if I can verify that it is unused. LPS that look flawless, without that verification will be MINT-

NEAR MINT Very minor flaws/ very few fine lines or imperfections. In general- will look& sound great

EXCELLENT Minor flaws/ wear such as fine lines, fine scuffs, or minor scratches that will have a minimal impact on play response.  Sound quality should be great!

VERY GOOD Will have flaws such as scuffs, scratches, wear or other marks, but these will not be significant enough for the record to play badly. In fact typically an LP with this grading will play and sound fine- no probs for those of you who like to listen to your vinyl; just not recommended for those of you that are perfectionists.

GOOD An LP with this grading will have significant scratches, scuffs or other wear. I only will list items with this grading if obscure or of significant interest, and in this case I will play test it and give a detailed response to how well it plays in the general item description above. Usually an LP with this grading will play OK, but could have louder crackles, and/or clicks; depending on variablility between turntables there could be tracking issues too.

About ME: My husband and I are both collectors of music and books and usually only sell when we have stockpiled enough stuff we are no longer interested in, to make it viable. Usually we are just happy buying rather than selling!! But, in the next few weeks we will have a large range of LPs coming up, from all kinds of rock to experimental, jazz, mor, classical and world music.
