Never issued in America on vinyl—never mind that it followed the excellent, decent selling Open Road, which in turn followed a number of hit singles—this is a strange, enjoyable double LP combining poems/nursery rhymes put to new music, all new songs for children, and new songs, including the single, “Celia of the Seals.” There are at least two Beatles connections here: Cover art and tri-fold poster are by "Patrick," who did the art for the Beatles’ Doll House, which of course became the Patrick-free White Album (that original art, I believe, appears on The Beatles Ballads UK compilation); and two songs, “Lord of the Reedy River” and “Voyage of the Moon,” that first appeared on Postcard (sessions that also produced the bootleg of McCartney and Donovan playing two more songs that ended up here: "Mr. Wind" and "The Unicorn.") HMS also boasts Donovan’s third collaboration with The Jeff Beck Group on “Homesickness,” said to feature Beck, Ron Wood, Nicky Hopkins, and Tony Newman. These two records have been played—I’ve owned this since it came out—meaning you’ll probably hear a few pops here and there. But vinyl and mauve Dawn Records labels look pretty damn good. Cover is in VG+ to excellent shape, with a slightly dinged upper left corner (visible in photo) though glue holding bottom seam in place has let go from age. (I could have repaired this without anyone knowing, but didn’t want it to be inauthentic. Feel free to do this.) Poster is beautiful and intact with small folds/creases all across very top, where it obviously stuck out from the cover. It is missing the plain inner sleeves that came with it.
