Here I have for sale a rare US import promo release of the soundtrack LP to Explorers (1985) by Jerry Goldsmith.

Condition (refer also to notes at bottom):
Vinyl – EX. Both sides look clean on visual inspection. No obvious signs of major wear. Played just pre-listing and sound clarity is superb.
Cover - VG-EX. Some corner and edge wear as well as creasing. Two minor staining patches on top left and right of front cover. Disc showthrough is evident but cover remains intact and colours are bright. Gold promo stamp clearly visible on the top rear reverse of album.
Sleeve – EX. Original MCA. White ‘window’ paper with rounded corners. Some minor creasing/folds but intact.

Review:

Goldsmith's entertaining and amusing score for this kid-sized fantasy vies for space with mid-'80s power-pop by Robert Palmer, Red 7 and Night Ranger. The film music is worth hearing (even moreso in context), but the interruptions are annoying.

A delightful and enchanting children’s film, Explorers – director Joe Dante’s first film after he gained considerably attention with Gremlins – sees three boys building a spacecraft and meeting aliens.  It’s part of that great raft of kids’ adventure films of the 1980s – while obviously not as well-known as ET or The Goonies etc, it’s warmly remembered by many people of a certain age.  Dante’s best films contain a certain subversiveness but he’s always been very competent when playing it straight and I’m surprised his career seems to have fizzled out somewhat.  

The most prolonged and successful relationship with a director in Jerry Goldsmith’s later career was that with Dante and this was their third film together (counting Twilight Zone: The Movie).  Goldsmith’s score is pretty much like the film – warm-hearted, a dash of humour, with plenty of adventure and excitement.  It features one of the composer’s very best themes – one which deserves to be injected into the public consciousness as much as any of the great adventure movie themes of the 1980s, but isn’t – presumably because the film is not quite so well-known.  “The Construction” is seriously good – one of Goldsmith’s most memorable pieces.  Bouncing pianos introduce the piece, soon joined by swirling strings and then the full orchestra for a rousing, stirring anthem which deserves a place on any list of the great pieces of film music.

VERY GOOD: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.

FAIR: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and / or defaced.

POOR: The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.

BAD: The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection filler.
