A Short Bio Of Bose

Subhas Chandra Bose (1897–1945) was one of the most enigmatic forces in the Indian Freedom Movement. Also known as Netaji, began his political career in Calcutta and went on to become the leader of the Indian National Congress. He was president of the party in 1938–39 but resign owing to ideological difference with Mahatma Gandhi; he advocated militancy to achieve independence for India and believed in dictatorship to unify the country. Jailed by the British for his Axis sympathies in World War II, he escaped (1941) and fled to Germany. In Germany with the help of Adolf Hitler he founded the Free India Centre in Berlin and established the Indian Legion, (consisting of some 4500 soldiers) from Indian prisoners of war who had previously fought for the British in North Africa, who had capitulated to the Nazi General Erwin Rommel The ‘Azad Hind Legion’ was attached to the Waffen SS, and they swore their allegiance to Hitler and Bose for the independence of India. In 1943 he headed towards Singapore went on to establish a Japanese-sponsored ‘Provisional Government of India’ and organized an “Indian National Army.” Although sympathetic to totalitarianism, his collaboration was principally directed toward freeing India from British rule and the establishment of an independent regime. Bose died in 1945 in a plane crash on his way to Japan. But his body was never recovered, and till today conspiracy theories concerning his possible survival abound.
