Ratos de Porão, translating to "Basement Rats" in English, is a legendary Brazilian hardcore punk band that emerged from São Paulo in the early 1980s. Founded by vocalist João Gordo and guitarist Jão, Ratos de Porão quickly became one of the most influential and enduring bands in the Brazilian punk scene.
Formed amidst Brazil's turbulent political climate, Ratos de Porão's music was a raw and uncompromising reflection of the social and economic struggles faced by the working class. Their aggressive sound, characterized by fast-paced guitar riffs, pounding drums, and confrontational lyrics, struck a chord with disaffected youth across Brazil.
In 1983, Ratos de Porão released their debut album, "Crucificados pelo Sistema" ("Crucified by the System"), which established them as pioneers of Brazilian hardcore punk. The album's blistering tracks, including "Cérebros Atômicos" and "Farsa Nacional," tackled themes of corruption, police brutality, and societal decay, earning the band a devoted following within the underground punk community.
Throughout their career, Ratos de Porão has continued to push the boundaries of punk music, incorporating elements of thrash metal, crossover, and even Brazilian rhythms into their sound. Albums like "Anarkophobia" and "Brasil" further solidified their reputation as one of the most important bands in Brazilian punk history.
Despite numerous lineup changes and personal struggles, Ratos de Porão remains a vital force in the global punk scene, touring extensively and releasing music that remains as relevant and incendiary as ever. With their uncompromising attitude and unrelenting energy, Ratos de Porão continues to inspire generations of punks to raise their voices against injustice and oppression.
