RAY BARRETTO; some may say he is the most talked about band-leader in the business. Could it be because he has had a lot of hits Could it be because his is the hottest band today? No, he hasn't made a lot of hits and he is not the hottest band in the business today but, he did have the biggest single hit any latin band ever had, at the very beginning of his career and was considered to be the band with the brightest future.
For the six years after that he went through many changes. He would disappear from the scene and then appear again.
When everybody would think him "dead" in the business, he would
"rise" again. He was the musician caught between two worlds One, I would call the world of beautiful conservative music and the other, the world of swinging music.
After the "WATUSI" album and the "LATINO" album, Ray was to do such albums as "BIG HITS LATIN STYLE" and other beautiful but conservative albums. The swinger from Spanish Harlem who started out playing soulful music was no more. Well meaning friends were to advise him to try and become a "commercial" success, and so try he did. While he was recording such things as movie themes, etc, he faded away from the world of swinging music. But Ray did come back!! He recorded
"GUAJIRA Y GUANGANCO" and the swingers started to talk about him again. After an album called "SENOR 007" he was again caught between two worlds. A person can't continue like this all his life; its either one thing or the other. Then came
"'LATINO CON SOUL",
, his decision was made.
His first move was to let the violins go. As much as he tried, they didn't seem to fit in with his new ideas
A few weeks ago we were playing at a big dance in the Bronx, Ray sat down and took a conga drum solo. He played and played, and a finger on his right hand began to bleed but he didn't notice because he was playing with his eyes closed. The blood was running from his finger on to the conga, but he kept playing. When he was through and the audience was applauding him, he looked and said "I cut myself", and I said to him, "Now again you are Ray Barretto, the Ray of six years ago"
That is the Ray you will see and hear from now on. After you are through listening to this album I know you'll agree that Ray Barretto is back with us.
