Ray Warleigh's First Album
The saxophonist's first recording under his name features Gordon Beck, Dave Goldberg or Gordon Kish on guitar, Kenny Napper and Ronnie Stephenson or Terry Cox on drums, and is produced by Scott Walker
Pretty scarce early Japanese pressed Philips stereo LP in gatefold sleeve, SFX 7175LP has obviously been played a fair few times. A number of marks around the spindle areas. A number of marks are detectable on the vinyl surfaces, but these are all mostly of a superficial and hairline nature, not nasty scratches or gouges. Playback is good throughout, this is one of those LPs with a playing quality far better than surfaces would indicate. The odd pop and background swish can be heard, but only at an extremely low level and pretty infrequently. Generally there are no loud and continuous clicks and the LP can be listened to comfortably from beginning to end without noise distraction being a worry. Only one mark creates a problem. Approximately the final third of 'Once I Loved' has a soft but continuous tick. This lasts until virtually the end of the track but does not encroach onto the final track. The click is not really loud and annoying, but is noticeable enough to prove a slight distraction to listening pleasure throughout its duration. Aside from this the LP provides a good listening experience. It is really beautifully recorded and performed jazz, and listening to it from beginning to end I can confidently say that the listening experience is really only marred to any great degree by the mark mentioned. The labels are clean and undefaced.
Gatefold sleeve in generally clean and complete condition. The sleeve is of thick card construction, more like a USA sleeve than UK, and this has helped prevent creasing. Just one or two isolated and tiny chips/dinks here and there, and the odd dot of a handling stain, but overall the sleeve is in great condition. There is an approx. three inch seam split to the back right hand top corner of the gatefold, but this is very neat and unobtrusive.
