The mammoth Reader's Digest/RCA Victor record set THE UNFORGETTABLE GLENN MILLER (RDA-54A) was clearly designed to last forever. The one I purchased two decades ago at a thrift shop (undoubtedly for a few dollars) still looks in pristine condition, and probably will 100 years from now.

A heavy cardboard outer box shields an inner carton of equal thickness. This inside holder has a hinged drop-down door that reveals six LPs, each stored in plastic-lined card stock sleeves with label windows. The upper right corners of these pastel-tinted sleeves are trimmed in graduated lengths and numbered so the user can instantly lay hands on one of a half-dozen vinyl discs. Their obverse sides offer biographical paragraphs for every song. The back cover of a 12" × 9" eight-page booklet has an alphabetized INDEX that identifies Record No., Side and Band for each track, making them most accessible.

With the greatest of foresight, RCA preserved their original molds for all of Glenn's records. These were used in the mastering process. Also here (album #4) are dubs from two film soundtracks. Brilliant filtering eliminates any stray crackle or pops without shearing away high frequencies. Gentle rechanneling enhances performances, even when heard over headphones. There's no ping pong panning or wind tunnel echo (think: DUOPHONIC) to muddy up the sound stage.

As demonstrated here, Glenn favored slow ballads like Elmer's Tune or Moonlight Serenade as much, if not more than swing numbers. Every track is imbued with his distinctive touch. All-in-all, it's a lavish (by-any-standards) set that recaptures the magic of the greatest big band to ever mount a dance or concert hall stage, the Glenn Miller orchestra!
