Description
It's always a problem grading these lovely old SKA records.
They went to lots of parties.
That means that they're a bit battered and that's why many have names written on the label.
HOWEVER... they're usually cut VERY LOUD and though they look a bit rough, they sound OK (especially if you press the "Mono" button).
This means that a 60's Ska goodie can be perfectly acceptable, even if it looks R.A.A.B.B. (Rough As A Bear's Bottom)..
Please bear that in mind when reading my descriptions.
Here we have The Lyrics and Ken Parker on a lovely 1967 COXSONE number 45rpm CS7003.
According to the internet (which is NEVER WRONG) this is only the THIRD 45 issued on Coxsone in the UK, being released on 14 Jul 1967.
The toons are: “A Get It” (by The Lyrics) and Ken Parker singing “How Strong”
The Lyrics are offering some fine late ska/early reggae.
On the other side, Ken Parker is demonstrating what Otis Redding’s “That’s How Strong My Love Is” would sound like as Jamaican R&B sung by Sam Cooke.
He calls it “How Strong”
Of course “That’s How Strong My Love Is” was (supposedly) actually written by Roosevelt Jamison specially for Sam Cooke. Otis heard the version recorded by O V Wright for Goldwax and made it into a classic.
I don’t think that Sam Cooke ever recorded it, so this is as close as you’ll get to Jamison’s original idea.
It is a solid banger of a track.
There are a couple of clicks at the start (mostly disappearing when the MONO button is pressed). Both sides are adorned with a few very light storage marks and a light scratch or two, which do not give grief to the ear’ole and don’t matter a hill o’ beans.
“JJ” has initialled one label, lightly, in biro.
Using the Record Collector Magazine standard grading, I reckon it’s somewhere like a very very strong VG+ but it plays MUCH BETTER.
