This beautiful LP from RCA (LSC-2609, US pressing, shaded dog label, 14S/14S stampers, stereo, original inner sleeve included) features Fritz Reiner and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra second recording of Richard Strauss’ Also Sprach Zarathustra Op. 30, set down in the warm acoustics of Orchestra Hall, Chicago, on 30 April 1962. Over 50 years on, Reiner and the CSO’s performance remains a landmark in the Strauss discography – truly stunning!

Wrote the wonderful author and critic David Hurwitz for ClassicsToday:

“As we all know, Reiner recorded Don Juan and Also sprach Zarathustra twice, and in both cases his later versions are better played and better recorded.”

And wrote the eminent critic David Nice for BBC Music Magazine:

“...Another later release, the 1962 Zarathustra, suggests greater spaciousness and dignity than its predecessor [Reiner's 1954 Zarathustra] due partly to the freed-up string sound, partly to Reiner’s broader tempi.”

Incidentally, the striking cover art reproduces C. MacNelly’s painting of a detail from Auguste Rodin’s bronze “The Burghers of Calais”. There are informative liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in English only.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket, still largely in the original shrinkwrap, is near-MINT. There is slight wear to the upper- and lower-right corners, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, or owners' markings, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, an outstanding collector's copy.

The condition of the LP is near-MINT and playback is superb – overall, a truly fine collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
