Description
In 1963 Billy Klüver approached Andy Warhol to produce record covers for his recording of artists participating in the Popular Image Exhibition at the Washington Gallery of Modern Art from April to June 1963. In March 1963, Klüver had interviewed the eleven artists taking part and produced an LP that was sold at the exhibition.
Warhol had begun using silkscreen printing in August 1962 and this cover was thus one of the first silkscreens he produced. Klüver and Warhol first spray painted the covers in red, orange, yellow, green and white and then silkscreened the Giant Size motif garnered from a newspaper advertisement.
Literally hundreds of covers were produced that Klüver used for records and sold a number without records. In 1971 a German dealer asked Klüver if he could ask Warhol to make a limited signed edition of the covers and Waarhol signed 75 of the white covers (with records) that now command very high prices.
March 2023 will be the 60th anniversary of Klüver's recording and Rockdoc has produced a new series of the "Giant Size $1.57 Each covers" using the same technique as Klüver & Warhol used in 1963 -- spray-painted record sleeves silkscreened with the "Giant Size" design. This is the ORANGE version.
