This handsome and rare LP from Vox (VLP 6490, US pressing, black/silver label, mono) features the great Ruggiero Ricci's very first – and argubaly finest – recording of Paganini's Violin Concerto No. 1 in D Major Op. 6 (in the Wilhelmj edition), made at the Salle Pleyel, Paris on 16 December 1947 with Eugène Bigot conducting the Lamoreux Orchestra.

Filling out the disc are Ricci's equally dazzling accounts of the following works by Paganini:

Le Streghe · Variations in D Major on a theme from the ballet Il noce di Benevento by Franz Xaver Süssmayr (Witches’ Dance) Op. 8 (M.S. 19)

Sonata a Preghiera ("Moses Fantasy"): Variations in F minor for the fourth string on the theme Dal tuo stellato soglio from the opera Mosè by Giacomo Rossini (M.S. 23)

Moto perpetuo Op. 11, Variations on ‘Nel cor più non mi sento’ (from Paisello’s ‘La Molinara’)

Here the legendary virtuoso is accompanied by his former teacher, violinist and SFSO Concertmaster Louis Persinger (also an accomplished pianist). Incidentally, the fine liner notes on the reverse of the jacket are by Paul Moor.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is light edgewear and mild discoloration to the rear panel, but that is all. Really, this is close to NM. There are no owners' markings, bends, seamsplits, other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, and very striking in appearance – overall, an excellent collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although the surfaces are not absolutely silent, this is a fine copy and the playback is quite superb. Those requiring flawless or NM surfaces are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
