This handsome LP – a still-sealed copy – from Eurodisc / Melodiya (203 728-425, German pressing, label iteration unknown, DDD stereo) features legendary pianist Sviatoslav Richter in mesmerizing “live” performances of Schubert’s Piano Sonatas No. 8 in B Major D. 575 and No. 11 in F minor D. 625.

The former was recorded at Bunka Kaikan Hall, Tokyo, on 2 July 1979 and the latter at NHK Hall, Tokyo, on 24 February 1979.

Wrote The Gramophone’s critic:

“[N]ot just a case of the performer subordinating himself to the composer, but of both, united in the service of music's greatest miracle - an entire attitude to life encapsulated in sound... From the opening phrases of each it is clear that his sights are set on long-term processes — this is not playing which depicts; rather it maps out a journey of the spirit.”

Production was supervised by Shoo Kaneko. The producer was Tomoo Nojima and the engineer Takashi Watanabe.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. The shrinkwrap is torn away along the bottom edge and there is wear to the lower two corners, but the jacket remains sealed, the LP unplayed. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.

The condition of the LP is MINT. This is a still-sealed, unplayed copy – the ideal collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
