Six years in the making, Right Away, Great Captain! has finally completed its trilogy of albums. The pet project of Andy Hull, of Manchester Orchestra, Right Away, Great Captain! tells the fictional story of a 17th century sailor who heads out to sea for 3 years only to return home and discover he’s been cuckolded by his own brother – and the vengeance that swiftly follows. The story comes to a close with the recent arrival of the final chapter, The Church of the Good Thief. To celebrate, RAGC released the complete set in this limited edition deluxe 4LP vinyl set, on Andy’s own vanity imprint, Favorite Gentlemen Recordings.
RAGC speaks through entries in the sailor’s journal – detailing his longing for his family, the loss of the ship’s captain, and the discovery of betrayal and loss of his family. Andy’s performance is incredible in his earnest lyrics and raw deliveries. Just his voice, an acoustic guitar, and some reverb, the albums are more Fevers & Mirrors-style Bright Eyes indie, than Decemberists’ sea shanties & period accurate diction one might expect. The fragility of a broken man versus his volatile revenge is beautiful in my favorite tracks “Memories On A Deck Part I” and “Gasoline Family” – both on The Bitter End (2006). The lead-in song from the recent The Church of the Good Thief, “Blame”, is also a beautifully told story of a man considering fate and whether we deserve the hands we’re dealt. Both The Eventually Home (2008) and The Church Of The Good Thief (2012) have some additional instrumentation – light percussion and piano backing tracks.
Only 1000 copies of the 4LP set were pressed and surprise – they quickly sold out.
