Rising Sons is a story of the history of the Province of South Australia from its legislative beginnings in Great Britain in the 1840's to the arrival of the Watherston family in Port Lincoln in 1860. A saga that would be linked to the horrors of WW 1.
The book begins in Scotland with the Watherston family and the birth, in 1810, of Alexander Watherston the grand father of six young Watherston men who were to perish, in World War One.
The story of a single family that reflects the lives of all those pioneering people who took part in the historically unique building of a Province that grew to be the State of South Australia, first as a Province in 1838 and finally as a State within the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901.
The history of Port Lincoln from its early days through to the 1930's reflects on the lives of the pioneering Watherston's and many other Port Lincoln families.
The central part of the book describes the horrors of WW 1 through the eyes of seven Watherston soldiers five of whom died on the battlefield, one within a week of his infected wounds and one from a military accident at the end of the war.

This local story of the war time loss of six grandsons including four brothers had been lost in history and was only brought to light through an accidental discovery by the books author Lee Clayton.
Two WW 1 Supreme Sacrifice Plaques honoring two soldiers, Edward and Cyril Watherston were discovered in 2002 at an auction in Port Lincoln of Mr. Eric O'Connor's collection. A discovery that lead to twelve years of research to prove the story of the Watherston soldiers. No other family in Australian military history were ever to loose so many sons and grandsons on the battlefield
