1956 33 1/3 RPM first press white label promo LP release by Jazz vocalist, Rita Reys. Reys a Dutch-born vocalist known as "Europe's First Lady of Jazz", was already well-known on the continent when she was discovered by American producer, George Avakian. Avakian brought her to the States for some gigs and this album, which features his enthusiastic liner notes. Side one of the record has backing by Rita's husband's band, the Wes Ilcken Combo, a 5 piece band with trumpet, sax, piano, bass, drums. The real treat of the album, however, is that the accompaniment on side 2 is by the ORIGINAL Jazz Messengers with their very first-and undoubtedly greatest lineup: Donald Byrd/trumpet, Hank Mobley/tenor saz, Horace Silver/piano, Doug Watkins/bass, and-of course-Art Blakey/drums! The Messengers apparently enjoyed playing with Rita so much that a number of live gigs were booked. Reys' vocal style is cool and amazingly assured-comparable to American vocalists like Chris Connor and June Christy, but with the added spice of her Dutch accent in the mix. This LP, due to the presence of the Jazz Messengers, is a major collectible with a high book value. Added to this is the fact that this is an extremely scarce promotional copy!

Front cover slick is clean with some slight ring wear visible at the center. Back cover has large name in marker (see our scan) and small music store stamp at top right. Cover has no stains, tears, writing or splits. Disc (heavy vinyl, "deep groove", original first press "six eye" label design, white promo label with red print) is clean and glossy. B side shows some extremely fine light marks which do NOT affect play. Overall, disc plays quite nicely with only minor surface noise and clear sound.
