I Can’t Give Back The Love I Feel For You b/w Something On My Mind
Tamla Motown TMG 643, 1968 (first UK issue).
We’re having a bit of a clearout of stuff at home so I’ve put my usual eBay sales of art and ephemera mostly to one side for a few weeks. I’ve got a large personal collection of vinyl, lots of which I don’t play any more, so one of the things I will be selling is records. Rita Wright (1946 – 2004) was later to become better known, of course as Syreeta Wright. Under this more glamorous name she was to have massive international hit singles, both as a solo performer and particularly in duet with Billy Preston on With You I’m Born Again. She also enjoyed great success as songwriting partner to her first husband Stevie Wonder.
At the beginning of her career in the early 1960s, Rita Wright was a session singer at Tamla Motown and only appeared on record as a background vocalist to other Motown acts. In 1968 however, she was offered the opportunity to make a solo record for the label and I Can’t Give Back The Love I Feel For You was the result. The single was not a hit on either side of the Atlantic.
I Can’t Give Back The Love I Feel For You did eventually became popular on the Northern Soul scene in the UK though and it was reissued in the UK in 1971 as TMG 791. The reissued version is easier to find now than the original but both are pretty scarce.
This example of the 1968 release is not in brilliant condition and I am only really offering it here because of its rarity value. It is certainly good enough to be a holding copy in your collection but only perhaps until the day you can find (or afford!) a better one. It has lots of surface marks and some noticeable scratches but it plays all the way through without any intrusive pops or clicks. It is a pretty raucous performance, which helps conceal background noise. It is crackly in the run-in and run-out grooves. Please bear all this in mind when bidding and you won’t be disappointed.
It comes in its original Motown sleeve. You can see from the images above that the labels are in OK condition but note that the centre is detached at two of the prongs. This does not make affect the record in any way of course but I mention it for the sake of completeness.
