Possibly the biggest EMI pressing gaff/cock-up until the Beatles 50th anniversary re-release of "Love Me Do".
Facts:-
The gaff/cock-up's are quite a simple had due care and attention at the mastering stage been the order of the day then it would never have happened.
(1) Millennium was wrongly mastered to mono and was over eq'd and compressed so the audio is pretty awful and nothing like the crisp clear sonics and stereo sound of the Telstar custom juke box unpainted IEP.
(2). At The cutting stage (at the lathe) the wrong matrix' were given to each metal Millennium was assigned Nimrod's and Nimrod assigned Millennium's.
(3) When it came to pressing the 999 10" singles the stamper operator did his job and correctly assigned the two sets of labels to the corresponding metals as per the matrix' as stamped in to the acetates at cutting! So although all the notes and paperwork and metals matched up>>>>> sadly the content didn't and at no stage was this pre-checked incase of>>>>>>cock-ups. So all 999 records physically as per matrix but not visually, have the labels attached to the wrong sides sonically.
This retro record was given away free at the opening of the new HMV store on the northside of Oxford Street, It was a great idea and was the perfect memento of the day. Until those of us with multi-speed turntables (Stanton ST 100) got the record home to play.
I contacted HMV retail HO and told them of the stupid and silly gaff, they were totally embarrassed and were annoyed that this was not picked up or corrected by EMI prior to shipping.
So, sadly it's there for Millennium, major and needless gaff-cock-up by EMI and sadly 12 years later still gaffing and cocking-up.
Due to lack of interest, care and attention.
One can only presume that the awful mastering of Millennium was some stupid attempt to make it sound like and match the sonics of Nimrod, which it dosen't Nimrod sounds quite crisp and clear in spite of it's age. Surely the whole point was to show the history and thus progress from deep wide groove mono cut in shellac to microgroove stereo cut into pvc.
The link between Sir Edward Elgar and Robbie Williams and thus record is that they both attended and officiated at the respective store openings!
It's a great item to look at and have, just not to play and that's the point, one was supposed to be able to play it sonically and visually as it was commissioned to be. I have no idea if after my telephone conversation if HMV retail declined to pay EMI's mastering and pressing charges, who knows!!
The only people running and working for record companies should be those that love the product inside-out.
