We’re having a bit of a clearout of stuff at home so I’ve put my usual eBay sales of art and ephemera mostly to one side for a few weeks. I’ve got a large personal collection of vinyl, lots of which I don’t play any more, so one of the things I will be selling is records. The soul singer, Robert Knight (1945 – 2017) was not quite a one-hit wonder but his recording career had really quite limited success. In 1961, he was part of a vocal group, the Paramounts, who had a hit in the US R&B charts with Free Me. After that, Knight did not record for some years but in 1967, when he was at university, he was spotted singing in a student vocal goup and offered the song Everlasting Love. Released on the Rising Sons label, Everlasting Love was a national pop hit in both the USA, where it reached no. 13. The song was also released in the UK (on Monument), where it reached no. 40.

A handful of singles followed Everlasting Love in the USA but none was sucessful. One of those singles however, was Love On A Mountain Top, released in 1968 with The Power Of Love on the B-side. The same pairing was released in the UK on Monument, only with the A and B sides reversed. That is the single that I have for sale here. This record made no impression on either side of the Atlantic at this release - but over the next few years, Love On A Mountain Top gradually became a popular track on the Northern Soul circuit in the UK.

In 1973, encouraged by the song’s popularity in the Northern Soul market , Monument re-released it in the UK with the A and B sides now matching the original 1968 USA release (i.e. with Love On A Mountain Top as the A-side). In that format, the song reached no. 10 in the UK charts.

Copies of the original 1968 UK release of this record are vanishingly rare. As you can see, this particular example is nothing less than an original demo of the record. There must be very few of these anywhere. Unfortunately, the condition of the playing surface is not particularly brilliant; the record has a lot of surface marks and scuffs. There are no serious scratches though and both sides of the record do play perfectly well all the way through. Love On A Mountain Top, being the noisier of the two sides, does not suffer too badly at all from crackling. The Power Of Love has quieter passages and some light crackling is audible during these sections.

As you can see from the images above there is a some damage to the label on the B-side, presumably where a sticker has been pulled off. The A-side label is in fine condition. The record is in a new, plain white sleeve.
