Description
Buddy Holly recorded "True Love Ways" and the other tunes with Dick Jacobs Orchestra on October 10, 1958 and "That Makes It Tough" on his Ampex portable recorder in his apartment on December 8, 1958. Although "True Love Ways" was completed in both stereo and mono in October 1958 the flip side was not over dubbed by Jack Hansen and his folks until January 1960., Originally released on "The Buddy Holly Story - Volume 2" March 1960 they didn't get around until June 29, 1960 to release this single. Both of these songs have long been favorites of mine, "True Love Ways" for a couple of reasons - one because it is so beautiful and two because my wife said that when she first heard it in March of 1960 that it bent her over and buckled her knees it was so heart wrenching. She was thirteen at the time. The flip side "That Makes It Tough" has always been a favorite since I watched him play it at KLLL studios on their old piano. This was in December 1958 when anyone could go up to the top of the Great Plains Life Building and get a glass of iced tea in the cafe on the twentieth floor and walk back to the corner of the floor that K triple L shared with them and listen to them yapping and playing music on the air as well as listen to the DJ s and whomever was visiting in their music room. I can still hear it like it was yesterday instead of sixty years ago playing loose chords and singing like Ray Charles. He had such a loud singing voice. Well, this is still a great record even without the Ray Charles imitation.
