Here we have a monstrously rare Rockabilly 78 rpm disc.
It’s “Shake it up” and “Maybe Baby” by a before-he-was-famous Conway Twitty on UK Mercury MT173.
It’s one of the slightly bendy vinyl 78s, not shellac, that Mercury and PYE were putting out in the last few years of the 78 era.
IF you ever find a good clean copy, that shines like Rylan Clark’s teeth, you’ll have to pay as much as sixty quid for it.
This copy does NOT shine like Rylan Clark’s teeth.
In fact the B side looks more like Shane MacGowan’s teeth.
Here’s the full description.
The A side (see pictures) is somewhat scuffed-looking, due to long years in a rough old sleeve. Despite looking rough-ish, it plays VERY WELL INDEED and is still quite collectable. The scuffs are only superficial, and a good rub with a lint free cloth would perhaps get rid of lots of them.
The B side (Maybe Baby) is a different story.
That rough old sleeve must’ve had some grit in it, and there are some VERY visible, (and audible) grit scratch marks over the first inch or two.
They stop being bothersome just as the guitar solo starts.
They sound as a regular crunch over perhaps the first minute of Conway’s vocal.
For the photo, I’ve held up the B side in very harsh morning daylight, so it looks even worse than it is.. because I’m trying to describe it fairly for you.
NEITHER SIDE has been played with steel needles (something to watch out for when buying these 50’s original vinyl pressings).
The A side looks scruffy, but is great fun and sounds nice and clean.
The B side looks revolting and has a regular crunch for the first minute.
Let’s call the A side a VG - - (will clean up a bit) and the B side a G +.
You’ll never see another, and the desirable A side (a rip-off of The Johnny Burnette Trio’s “Tear It Up”) plays very well despite its dishevelled appearance.
Look at the pictures, read the description, have a bit of a think, and bid with confidence.
