Description
It's always a problem grading these lovely old SKA records.
They went to lots of parties.
That means that they're a bit battered and that's why many have names written on the label.
HOWEVER... they're usually cut VERY LOUD and though they look a bit rough, they sound OK (especially if you press the "Mono" button).
This means that a 60's Ska goodie can be perfectly acceptable, even if it looks R.A.A.B.B. (Rough As A Bear's Bottom)..
Please “bear” that in mind when reading my descriptions.
Here we have “Change Of Plans” by the multi-talented (and “Godfather Of Rocksteady”) Alton Ellis.
Mr Google tells me that he was the older brother of recording star Hortense Ellis, and the father of more than twenty children.
He must have had a bike.
Mr Google also informs me that this toon is also known as “Can I Change My Mind”.
The other side is “He Will Break Your Heart” by the equally wonderful Cables who first recorded for the remarkable Sonia Pottinger.
The two tracks here, however, are both Coxon Dodd productions, from 1969 appearing on a UK pressing from his very collectable Studio 1 label (number SO 2084 A/B).
Dating back to the upper Cretacious period, you would expect this disc to be FBR (see note below) but it is actually VERY, VERY CLEAN INDEED. It shines “like a good deed in a naughty world” (Yer actual Shakespeare, “Merchant Of Venice”).
Using the “Record Collector” magazine’s yardstick, I reckon it’s a strong E- or thereabouts, with a following wind.
There are a very few tiny unimportant marks to stop it being mint, but you’ll never find a cleaner copy.
It is collectable and plays stupendously.
By the way, in case you were wondering, the grade F.B.R. is even worse than R.A.A.B.B.
The “B. R.” stands for “Beyond Redemption” but I’m not sure what the “F” stands for.
