Summary

This single was Rod’s very first solo record, recorded on 10th September 1964. Despite having the right credentials for a hit single at the time and an appearance on ITV’s top pop show ‘Ready Steady Go’ to help promote it, the record failed to achieve commercial success.

Copies of this record have become very collectable. Record Collector’s Rare Record Price Guide 2010 gives a guide price of £140 in Mint condition. Original copies seldom come onto the market in any condition, and this example is both presentable and still good to play.

The vinyl’s playing surfaces are typical of an average VG grade record. On the A-side a little surface noise is present but the playing quality is definitely superior to that of a record graded as ‘Good’ (see Grading Definitions below). On the B-side the audio quality is not quite so good but remains acceptable. On both sides there is fractional evidence of edge warping but this is so slight the effect is only audible on the run-in tracks.

The A-side label bears some faint writing (the name ‘Letwin’ repeated twice and a letter ‘S’). There is slight wear on the raised surfaces. The B-side label is virtually unmarked. There is slight evidence of spidering on both labels (where the record has momentarily come into contact with the top of the spindle when placed on the turntable). The A-side shows some spindle wear (see picture).

The sleeve is an original Decca sleeve. It is in nice VG condition with no splits or stickers and displays good strong colour. On the reverse the catalogue number of another contemporaneous release (‘F12118’) has been written in the top right-hand corner.

This is a significant record in the long history of a rock singer who subsequently achieved sustained success at the pinnacle of his profession. I am confident the successful bidder will be pleased with this record.

Notes about my Records

Record Gradings

The gradings I use are those defined by Record Collector, sometimes supplemented by + or – signs for fine-tuning.  For example an otherwise Excellent record with light scuff marks which are purely cosmetic and have no impact upon audio quality might merit an EX- rating rather than a wholesale downgrading to VG.   At the end of the day record gradings are always subjective, but I try hard to be accurate.  Record Collector defines seven gradings ranging from Mint down to Bad.  I seldom offer a record in anything less than Very Good condition unless it is particularly rare or collectable. These are the definitions I use:

Mint (M): The record is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality.  The cover and any extra items (eg booklet, poster, lyric sheet) are in perfect condition.  Sealed or unplayed items should be Mint.

Excellent (EX): The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality.  The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.

Very Good (VG):  The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch.  Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

Good (G):  The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches.  The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.

Lower grades are defined but I rarely use them.

My assessment of a record's condition is based on my experience of 25 years occasional trading (record fairs, mail order, retail sales and eBay).
