ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful LP – a superb collector’s copy – from Westminster (WST 14006, US pressing, black/red “Natural Balance” label, stereo) features Artur Rodzinski and the Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra of London (Beecham’s RPO) in an incandescent account of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 in F minor Op. 36, recorded in the spacious acoustics of Walthamstow Assembly Hall, London, on 20 September 1956. Rodzinski was always a potent exponent of the Russian repertoire, Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich in particular, as those who have heard his various NYPO airchecks (on AS Disc CDs) know, but here he enjoys much richer sound, with no loss in tension or dynamism. This remains one of the very greatest Tchaikovsky’s Fourths on record, still a landmark in the work’s vast discography.
Incidentally, the fine liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket, provided in English only, were written by WNYC Radio Station Music Commentator David Randolph.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the front laminated jacket is EXCELLENT++. Really, the flaws are minimal – some slight edgewear and minuscule bumping at corners, but that is all. Otherwise, the album appears almost as new. There are no bends, seamsplits, owners' markings, or other defects and the jacket remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, a very fine collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT++. Although the surfaces are not absolutely CD silent, in general the playback is truly superb – overall, this is a very fine collector's copy.
