Speaking of blockbusters: here's one! A very small edition double LP originally released 20 years ago; now "Amused To Death" has been reborn as a 200g double LP from Analogue Productions. "Amused To Death" was mixed by Pink Floyd producer/engineer James Guthrie, and he and Doug Sax collaborated on the vinyl mastering, which is then pressed to utter perfection by Quality Record Pressings!
A wonderful album, both in terms of the idea, the lyrics and the music.
For his third solo album, Roger Waters, the former bassist, singer, songwriter and co-founder of Pink Floyd, takes listeners on an inner journey examining how human society has been influenced by mass media, particularly television. The title of this complex concept album is taken from a book by author Neil Postman, which also explores the dangers and alerts us to how the mass media shapes our lives. In the title song, aliens land on Earth after humanity's extinction and find only skeletons grouped around televisions. The alien anthropologists use every possible test to find out the reason for this 'sad demise'. Your conclusion? »This species has amused itself to death. = This species was having fun to death«.
The idea is illustrated with the help of a cover photo of a gorilla watching television - "just flipping through the channels to see if anything interests him," says Waters. Like so many of us these days.
Q Magazine describes "Amused To Death" as sounding more like a Pink Floyd album than Waters' other solo efforts to date. It's a brother of "The Wall", perhaps even a distant relative of "Dark Side Of The Moon", which should delight fans of those albums.
Original pressings of "Amused To Death" are so rare that these days you'll have to shell out up to $800 to buy a mint copy. Nothing was spared for this historic revival. Let's repeat: This edition is cut from the analog master tapes. James Guthrie and Doug Sax team up to master this vinyl version, which is pressed to perfection by Quality Record Pressings!
"Amused To Death" was originally mixed using Q-Sound, a virtual surround sound that enhances the spatial feel of the music and the various sound effects scattered throughout the album. The reissue by Analogue Productions will faithfully reproduce this three-dimensional sensation.
"Amused To Death" has a wonderful recording quality of lush depth and rich sound. The fourteen tracks flow into each other, which means that this album is best enjoyed as a whole. Using the shuffle function could be equated with randomly reading individual pages of a long essay. Waters deals with a wide range of topics such as capitalism, war, religion, American fast food, television, film director STANLEY Kubrick and Broadway composer Andrew Lloyd Webber.
Waters was able to find some notable studio collaborators: Don Henley joins him on "Watching TV," the National Philharmonic Orchestra joins in on "Too Much Rope," and Rita Coolidge appears during the title track. Waters recruited legendary guitarist Jeff Beck for musical support. The production quality from Waters, Nick Griffiths and Patrick Leonard is simply stunning.
“Working with James Guthrie once again to produce a benchmark reissue of an important album is a wonderful opportunity for Acoustic Sounds,” says its founder and CEO Chad Kassem.
»Whenever you're lucky enough to work with James Guthrie, it's really exciting. Our common goal is to produce a product of the highest possible quality,” says Kassem. »I think we are a good team. He brings his expertise and I bring mine. When you get to work with the person who originally worked on the album and you know they're a perfectionist, you're excited and at the same time trusting that the album will be as good as it can be.«
"Amused To Death" is cinema for the ears. Food for the brain. Waters says of this album that “it really unfolds with repeated listens. The more you listen, the more you see.«
