Description
A rare opportunity to acquire a clean copy of the Rolling Stones 1st album, with the word 'MONO' missing from the top right corner on the reverse of the sleeve.
When the album was originally pressed there were several mistakes on the label & cover. It was quickly withdrawn and the typesetters were instructed to design new labels and cover. In their rush to get the new design completed so as not to interfere with sales, a 2nd cover was hastily printed which was missing the word 'MONO' from the top right hand corner on the reverse (see photo). Again this was quickly withdrawn before a 3rd and final cover was designed without any mistakes. This, 2nd cover, pressing is probably the only one of its type for sale on Ebay. These are getting harder to find as collectors buy them & let's be honest, they aren't making any more! As well as being a debut album from one of the most influential rock bands of their time, this is also a fantastic opportunity for a sound investment piece which will only increase in value over time.
The matrix number in the run-outs are Side 1 XARL-6271-2A & Side 2 XARL-6272-4A. Unboxed DECCA grooved label with the KT tax code for the U.K. The album is completely flat with no warps, jumps or skips. There are a few light surface marks visible but I have played both sides of the album while writing this listing and it sounds fantastic with minimal crackling between tracks only. The cover is laminated to the front only & showing minimal wear for a 52 year old album, with a flip-back to the reverse. There are no pen/pencil marks anywhere on the cover and all the printing is clear on both the front & reverse. The labels on both sides are clear with some spindle marks visible but other than that they are in remarkable condition, please take a look at the photos.
The album will be packaged in a stiff cardboard album wallet with extra internal stiffeners for protection & will be sent insured & tracked, it will also need to be signed for. My prefered method of payment is be by internet bank transfer as I have had issues with paypal in the past with not being able to clear the funds into my own account. Paypal say they have two accounts set up in my name which causes confusion and usually ends up in endless conversations to people in Ireland over the phone. I will also offer free p&p (U.K. mainland only) for payments received via bank transfer. By using a bank transfer there is still an auditable trail. I have used this method in the past without any concerns or issues. Apart from cash, I can also take a credit or debit card payment should you wish to collect the album. You are welcome to come and view the album & listen to it being played before you decide. I live in the cotswolds approx 15 miles south of Gloucester. I also have another copy of this LP for sale with the first cover and labels, which include all the mistakes. If you are interested please let me know. Please note that postage is to the U.K. mainland only.
Thank-you for looking and taking the time to read my description. If you have any questions please either contact me through ebay or call me on 07815 314161. Kind Regards Will...
IMPORTANT ADDENDUM! Following some advice from another ebayer I have done some further research & it seems that while some websites claim this lp is a 1st pressing, having 21 variations, 'www.stonesondecca.com' are saying it is a 2nd press & cover. A lot on here claim to be first pressing that are not! The LP was released for sale on April 17th 1964. If you visit www.stonesondecca.com there are clear explainations as to the variations in covers and labels etc. Apologies for any confusion but this is a minefield with lots of conflicting info to be seen. This is an extremely rare piece, especially in this condition. Once again, thanks for looking!
