This promo 45 arguably represents a little crossroads in music history!
This is a 1964 red/white promo release on Parlaphone (R5197) of West Side Story’s ’America’ by Rory Storm and The Hurricanes, a very rare 45 by a lesser known group that were highly influential in the late 50s/early 60’s; despite never having a successful recording career - and close ties to The Beatles.
Rory Storm (Alan Caldwell) and the Hurricanes formed in Liverpool but before this happened to open a skiffle club in 1958 in the cellar of a house, where they and others such as the Quarrymen performed until repeatedly closed down due to noise complaints; this is purportedly where George Harrison auditioned and was accepted into the the Quarrymen.
A certain Ringo Starr was convinced to give up his climbing frame manufacturing job and join as drummer with the Hurricanes full time in 1960 at their first residency, and later was poached by The Beatles in 1962 to form the legendary later-lineup we know today.
They were one of the most popular acts on the Liverpool and Hamburg club scenes alongside the Beatles, but only ever released 2 singles and 1 compilation track during their pomp in the 60’s; neither of which charted.
This 45 is a promo of the second of their singles, which happens to be (the only recording ever?) produced by Brian Epstein of later Beatles management fame.
Would they have been more successful if Ringo stayed? Would The Beatles still have been huge? Who knows. Either way it’s arguable the music industry wouldn’t have had ‘The Beatles’ as we know them without Rory Storm and The Hurricanes.
This particular copy is in what appears to be a period-appropriate Parlophone sleeve, with clean labels aside from the duration note, a ‘grading’ note and date stamp; this copy came from the collection of a gentleman that provided audio-quality feedback on promo tracks hence the markings (see our current other items).
The record itself is fairly marked with lots of spidering around the edges, however when played through sounds perfectly fine; Side A has some very minor crackle in parts and the finest pop here or there, while B has some crackle through quieter sections and also some minor pops.
Please bear in mind I take our pictures under very strong light to aid transparency, sleeves/labels are not discoloured unless stated and scratches/marks WILL appear worse than when handled.
