Chorus of the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence (Chorus Master: Elisabeth Brasseur)
Rosbaud’s reading can withstand the most exalted comparisons, be it with Giulini, Kleiber, Klemperer, Karajan, et al. The entire performance is imbued with a tremendous sense of occasion – a warm and sparkling and moving account of this remarkable work.
Incidentally, in addition to the lovely cloth box, one is treated to a truly lovely full-size booklet with extensive notes on the music by Dorel Handman, reproductions of documentary artwork relating to the original first production, and the complete vocal text, both in the original Italian and in French translation. This, and the box as well, are works of art in themselves.
CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the box is near-MINT. It shows the barest aging, and some slight cracking along the spine (no splits), but that is all. Otherwise, it appears almost as new. There are no seamsplits, corner breaks, bends, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the box remains solid, bright, and extremely attractive – overall, a lovely collector’s copy.
The condition of the full-size booklet is near-MINT; really, a superb copy.
The condition of the 3 original inner sleeves is near-MINT. They show slight discoloration, but are free of seamsplits, markings, or any other defects.
The condition of the 3 LPs is EXCELLENT to NM. Though surfaces are not absolutely silent, really these are fine copies and playback is superb. Those requiring perfect surfaces copies are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, these rate as truly excellent collector's copies.
