This handsome and exceedingly rare 2 LP gatefold set  from the European String Teachers Association · ESTA (E1/E2, German pressing, silver label, stereo) features legendary violinist Max Rostal, as well as his colleagure Yehudi Menuhin – “live” in concert at the Third International ESTA Conference held in Elmau, Germany, in April 1976.

Regrettably, Rostal made all too few recordings, all of which are worth seeking out. “Live” material with this remarkable violinist is doubly rare and this semi-private, non-commercial issue is a great memento – in warm, modern sound – of his unique and rarified artistry.

It is worth noting that this album preserves on work not otherwise represented in Rostal’s slender, but distinguished discography: Beethoven’s Violin Sonata No. 1 in D Major Op. 12 No. 1. Although Rostal recorded a number of Beethoven Violin Sonatas for Decca during the years 1946-1952, Op. 12/1 was not among them.

There are informative liner notes (uncredited) on the interior panels of the gatefold jacket, provided in German, French, and English. The cover striking cover design is similarly uncredited.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the gatefold jacket is EXCELLENT+. Really, this is close to NM. The only “flaws” concern some minuscule wear at corners and the faintest shelfwear. There are no seamsplits, owners’ markings, bends, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, a truly excellent collector’s copy.

The condition of the 2 LPs is near-MINT. Although the surfaces are not absolutely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) these are fine copies and playback is superb. If you must have flawless surfaces, then please do not buy this set – these rate as NM collector's copies.
