This handsome and very rare LP from Decca (LXT 2732, orange & silver Label, mono, English Pressing) features the remarkable Max Rostal in a deeply felt and penetrating account of Beethoven's Violin Sonata No. 9 in A Major Op. 47 'Kreutzer', recorded at Decca's West Hampstead Studios, London, in January 1951 with pianist Franz Osborne.
Rostal's reading of this masterpiece is simply magical from the first bar and can be spoken of in the same breath as those by Thibaud, Huberman, Menuhin, et al. The truthful and atmospheric recording, the piano and violin well balanced, belies its age and mono origins.
All too little of Rostal's far-ranging repertoire was recorded, and any disc by this great artist, a pupil of the legendary Carl Flesch, is an object lesson in the art of interpretation.
Incidentally, the striking cover art was executed by Jock Kinneir. There are insightful liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, provided in Englsh only.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is FAIR. There is a 1" cut / tear to the lower spine that goes through both the front and rear panels. There is also a fair amount of edgewear, aging, and discoloration. However, the jacket remains solid and presentation worthy – not a collector's copy, but still a decent one.
The condition of the LP itself is VERY GOOD. Though there is occasional surface noise and scattered tics, in general playback remains quite fine. If you must have a flawless or near-MINT copy, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a very good collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
