It's prime crate-digging season here in this neck of Texas, and the swamps just keep on giving! This auction is for Rocky Gil & The Bishops, "Soul Party" b/w "After Party" on the Tear Drop label. Quick, general one-sentence backstory - Tear Drop was founded by a bayou DJ and was based just a little north of Houston, Texas, in a town called Conroe. This one is a funk machine! James Brown "Get on the Good Foot" vocal commands meet that Archie-Bell "Tighten Up" rhythm and instrument breakdown. Sweet drum break, too.
This week's harvest includes San Antonio soul, private label Nashville/honky tonk, and a smattering of out-of-town classic & Northern Soul. A lot of these are what I like to call "Rough Rarities" - no warps or skips, but audible static and visual signs of scuff and wear. Some more than others. I will not be assigning Goldmine ratings to any of these; the best way to know if you want this one is by zooming, looking, and listening. And I'm always glad to answer any questions or receive info on the groups, which I'll promptly share on this page. Thanks for checking this one out!
