Dr. John's Spin Factory brings you the greatest hits of one of the greatest pop voices in history. Presenting Roy Orbison's "All Time Greatest Hits," a two-LP package remastered and reissued in 1997 from the original analog tapes by one of the post-production masters, Steve Hoffman, and pressed on exceptional quiet, virgin vinyl. This copy, like the original on Monument Records is a lovely and informative gatefold (see photo). Because this is a DCC vinyl album it is a numbered, limited edition. This albums' number is 1943 (see photos). There is one relatively small flaw in the jacket--the upper left corner is crinkled (see photos from both sides of that corner). Otherwise, the jacket and discs look virtually new. Playback across all four sides is flawless and of audiophile quality. Actually, I would bet that playback of this copy is better than new after cleaning with my Kirmuss ultrasonic record cleaning machine.
If this is music you wish to own on vinyl, here is what I consider the key question to ask yourself: Is there a more desirable, better sounding version of this music? (There are many other versions, to be sure.) Doubt it... These discs sound pretty awesome. And then there's the energy at the center, Orbison's voice. Powerful. Semi-operatic. Emotive. With a vocal range, smoothness, and intensity of feeling pretty much unmatched by any other pop star of his era. Roy Orbison, truly musically unique.
