Royal Doulton Toby Jug
Royal Doulton Rare Antique Toby Jug Blue Coat Holding Cup and Bottle
This is a very early RD Toby. It features a light brown base with Toby in a blue coat holding a bottle and chalice wearing a brown hat, a white wig and his face unpainted.
"The first Toby jug was made in the 18th century,
but their origins go back two hundred years.
Father and son potters, both called Ralph Wood,
of Staffordshire were credited with producing the
first Toby jugs. These pieces were quite unlike
the vividly colored ones we see today. Their colors
were drab blues, browns, yellows and greys."
Doulton has made Toby Jugs in the traditional manner since 1815
This Toby stands 22cm (9ins) tall.
He is generally in good condition although has had a repair to the spout (see pictures).
The number on the base is, I think, 859.
He is a heavy jug and will need careful secure packaging, hence the postage estimate.
