This lovely LP from RCA (LSC-2635, German Teldec Telefunken-Decca pressing, red/silver "Living Stereo" label, original inner sleeve included) features Artur Rubinstein’s supremely eloquent rendition of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor K. 466, recorded with conductor Alfred Wallenstein and the RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra in the spacious acoustics of Manhattan Center, New York City, on 31 March 1961.

Filling out the disc is Rubinstein’s equally poised and magical account of Haydn’s Variations in F minor HXVII No. 6, set down at the American Academy of Arts and Letters, New York City, on 19 April 1960.

This is exalted playing by any measure and all those who treasure the art of the piano, or of Mozart’s remarkable piano concertos, will find much to admire here. The sound is first rate.

On the reverse side of the jacket are printed eloquent liner notes by Irving Kolodin, Music Editor of The Saturday Review. The striking cover art shows a portrait of Mozart, with this caption: “A silhouette of Mozart, made by Rossini and inscribed ‘The famous composer Mozart, the master of masters. To my dear Piermartini’ Piermartini was the architect of La Scala”.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. Although there is some edgewear, the jacket remains so attractive, with a fine lustre to it, that I think it rates VG. The only real flaw is a small tear to the upper-right corner. There are no owners’ markings, seamsplits, bends, or other defects, and the whole remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, a very good collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although the surfaces are not absolutely silent, really this is a fine copy and playback is superb, close to NM. Those requiring a flawless or near-MINT copy are advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this is an excellent collector's copy.
